This case study features Deerheart Collective, a tattoo studio run by Amy Grant.
Case Study Deerheart Collective
As the name suggests Deerheart collective consists of four local tattoo artists who work from an open plan studio that also includes a separate room for a local barber that welcomes all ages. The talents of all those involved in Deerheart were in high demand and the waiting list for customers was edging closer to a year so Amy made the decision to relocate the business to bigger premises on London Road South just near the towns famous Bascule bridge.
Amy was using the services of a local bookkeeper to help her keep track of the everyday income and expenses, then at the end of the financial year, she used a local accountancy firm to take care of the bookkeeping work and filing her personal tax return. With no business support from her accountant, making the move to new, bigger premises was a big decision for Amy and although she was happy with her current bookkeeper, she felt she needed the additional business support to help her take the business to the next level.
Amy was introduced to us by her office manager. When we first met with Amy it was clear she needed help with many aspects of the business from marketing to the overall structure of the business. We agreed to meet for a coffee and listened to her concerns and agreed on implementing some simple solutions that would improve the way the studio operated.
Along with business support, Amy also asked us to upgrade her accounting and record-keeping system, Amy was currently using spreadsheets to keep track of her income and expenses which were not producing any long-term benefits in terms of financial reports to gauge how well the business was performing.
Amy decided to switch from this traditional method to QuickBooks cloud accounting system which utilized our monthly accounting system to provide her with the data needed to assist with growing the business.
We got to work on migrating the current data to QuickBooks and now Amy can track her business finances on the go, produce sales invoices, integrate her PayPal and update her business expenses using email and Receipt bank, a mobile phone app. Amy now spends less time on paperwork and more time on other important aspects of running and growing her business.
With very little experience of running a business, Amy asked us for ongoing mentoring support as she felt this will help her make better business decisions. This is still ongoing and we have witnessed first-hand the improvements Amy is making and she is developing into quite the businesswoman! Naturally, her business is all the better for it and her too.
